Please use the information contained in this pack to prepare for you CBT course.
CBT stands for compulsory basic training. This is not a test but a continual assessment of your ability and you must be competent in all the elements of the CBT before the necessary "CBT form" DL196 can be issued.
The elements are:
Element A - Intro
Element B Practical onsite training - motorcycle controls - motorcycle checks - stands - wheeling the motorcycle around - starting the motorcycle.
Element C - Practical on site riding
Element D - Practical on road training
Element E - Practical on road riding.
The time it takes to complete the element of the CBT is determined by your ability.
You will progress from one element to the next when your trainer is is satisfied that you have the necessary theory and practical skills to be safe.
CBT can only be given by an Authorised Training Body (ATB)
Your "CBT Certificate" DL196 has a two year life and if you have not passed your practical riding test by the end of the two years you will have to take it again.
Further training is available after you have completed your CBT.
The importance of have the right equipment and safety gear:
1. It protects you from the weather,
2. It protect you from injury,
3. It can make you more visible to other road users
Helmet
Is one time only safety device and it is a legal requirement to wear a properly fastened helmet.
There are mainly three types of helmets:
Open face

Flip face
You should wear a helmet that conforms with the standard set by European directive EC 22-05. This is normally on the helmet.
There are different types of straps on helmets. Rollerbar - Double Dring - Rachet -Seatbelt.
Helmet construction:

Do not use solvents to clean your helmet rather use specialist cleaning products specially developed for helmets. If you're helmet has been dropped and damaged rather consider replacing it. Helmets have lifespans.
It is better to have a white or coloured helmet than a dark one. This will help you to be seen by other road users.
Visors: Make sure they are for road use, especially if you have a darkened visor.
You can use the Sharp Test when selecting your helmet. Use a responsible dealer when purchasing a helmet.
Make sure your helmet fits comfortably around your head with no pressure points. It should also not be to lose or come of your head when properly fastened.

Your boots should not let water in and thus protect you from the weather. It should have a good grip sole and have some reflective material so that you can be seen in poor visibility.
Trousers:

You normally have a choice between:
Leather (normally more abrasive resistant and less water resistant)
Textile (normally more comfortable and water resistant and less abrasive resistant)
Kevlar (like normal jeans but with Kevlar protection added)
Should have reflective material so that you can be seen in poor visibility.
CE knee and hip protection important.

It is important to protect your hearing. Sound created in your helmet and on the motorcycle could damage your hearing if not protected.

Plastic overcoat will keep the weather at bay.

Keep warm in cold weather by using layers but remember to get to hot is also dangerous.
